Snake!

I woke up early this morning to hear my wife screaming hysterically. Apparently a snake made its way into the house. My mother, already awake at the time, looked for it and found it hiding under some junk outside. I went over and took a look at what it was. All I could see was that there was something black down there and it could easily be mistaken for a shadow. Then it moved, and crawled back into the house hiding under the sewing machine. I managed to drag it out using a stick, it looked like it was ready to go when it went into a coiled position like you see on those nature shows. I took no chances, whacked it couple of times and when I hit it on the head it got stunned. I hit it on the head once more for good measure.

When it finally stopped thrashing around, I grabbed it by the tail (it was still moving) keeping the head as far away from me as possible. I took it outside to get a good look at it. I’m no snake expert and I couldn’t tell if this guy was venomous or not. So I took some pictures, hopefully someone will be able to identify what it is and whether it’s endangered or not.

Basic description:

Length: About 1 meter

Color: Topside, dark brown or olive green getting darker going to the tail end where it’s all black. Underside has a yellowish color.

Pattern: It looks like bands of black going across its body.

Before you can say “Pics or it didn’t happen”, here you go:

These were taken using a Motorola Razr V3x and a Nokia 6630. I wish I had a better camera.

I grabbed the nearest objects I could use for scale at the time, a 5 Peso coin and a plastic folder spine thingie. The 5 peso coin measures 2.8 cm and the folder spine is 305.5 cm. I checked its mouth to see if it had any fangs like the ones found in venomous snakes. I could not seem to find any. But maybe it was because it got broken when I hit it on the head. I’m guessing this is a constrictor of some sort and if it were up to me, I would have just let the little guy go. My mother would have none of it though and as soon as I went to get coffee, she killed it :(

The village where I live still has a lot of vacant lots. It’s been raining here recently and there’s a lot of vegetation and foliage around where these guys can hunt. This is the second snake I’ve found (and the second one my mother has killed). We have all sorts of creatures around so it doesn’t come as a surprise for me. One time we even had a monitor lizard living in our roof gutter. It made short work of the rats in our house until my bonehead cousin eventually caught it and ate the thing.
