Computer Technician/Instructor (FULL TIME)
Computer Technician/Instructor (PART TIME)
I have written most of my software using high-level interpreted programming languages such as PHP, Perl, Java, and Python. Hardware is not always an issue since programs I write tend to run on any platform where an interpreter for the language I use exists.
My development machine is a 1.7Ghz Pentium 4 running Ubuntu Linux.
My prefered development environment is Eclipse with the following plugins:
For version control, I prefer to use darcs, though I am fully capable of working with other version control software such as CVS and Subversion.
I have sufficient knowledge in configuring local area networks with stations running either Win32 or Linux.
I have been using Gnu/Linux operating systems since 1997 and have gained a thorough working knowlege of the many available Gnu/Linux distributions (Debian, Redhat, Fedora, Slackware, SuSE). I also have a thorough working knowlege of source-based Gnu/Linux distributions such as Gentoo and Linux From Scratch. I am also fully capable of working with the BSD derivatives of Unix (FreeBSD, OpenBSD).
I have abandoned Microsoft Windows (Win32 and Winnt) as a development platform in favor of open and standards-based platforms. Although on very rare occasions I still write code for Microsoft Windows using Python, Perl, Java, or C/C++.
I prefer to use high-level interpreted languages such as PHP, Perl, Java, and Python because they allow for rapid application development and platform-independence. When it comes to systems development, I prefer to use the language which gives the most satisfactory return on investment in terms of time and development effort. For web development, PHP is my language of choice. I use Perl or Python for small throw-away programs and for other projects where PHP would not suffice. I do resort to using compiled high-level languages such as C, C++, and Java as the need arises.
I have also developed software using special-purpose languages such as YACC, LEX, Awk, Foxpro for DOS, and Visual Foxpro.
Most of the software I write these days interact with RDBMS servers such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, both of which implement a subset of ANSI SQL92 and SQL99.
I am currently learning C# and ASP.NET using an open source implementation of the .Net Framework (Mono).
I am capable of working with traditional software development methodologies (Waterfall model) or with more recent ``Agile'' methodologies. I do my best work alone, though I am willing to be part of a good design and development team.
I can write effective English prose at any technical level, having
served as Layout Artist and later as Associate Editor for our college
paper, The Hillside Echo. I have also written tutorials and other
materials for various seminars during my college years and during my
tenure as an instructor.
